Media Recaps: Week of 8/12/12
Author’s Note: Each week, I will select Asian-American news deemed unique from a certain state and summarize the content and its media responses. This week, I focused on news coming from Philadelphia.
News: Assaults on today’s Asian Americans are on the rise. According to Colleen Curry of Good Morning America, three minors from Philadelphia attacked Minh Tran, a women from Vietnam who was mentally handicapped. These children invaded Tran’s home and assaulted her with various household items
The 10-year-old boy was charged with assault, conspiracy and robbery, whereas two other minors, who were both under 10 years old, evaded charges because they could not have been legally incriminated under Philadelphia state law.
Minh Tran, fortunately, survived the attack.
Media responses:
- The mother of the 10-year-old boy, who suspected her son was behind the attack, turned him in to authorities, reported Kelly Bayliss of NBC10 Philadelphia.
- Jonathon Lai of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Philadelphia police are now searching for a 7-year-old boy who participated in the brutal beating of Tran.
Social Media Response:
- Angry Asian Man cannot comprehend the reason these boys would attack Tran.
