Every week, Dumpling takes a look at the journey that is new release CDs and DVDs. We look for those that feature Asian-American musicians, actors and directors. While the week’s offerings ebb and flow like the tide on a beach (we’re dreaming of summer), we’ll be sure to catch the latest for your listening and viewing pleasure. But if we miss anything, let us know in the comments.
CDs
Toro y Moi’s June 2009 is a retrospective album featuring limited-release guitar-based songs from 2009. A must for any fan of Toro y Moi, the collection features a mellow array of pop songs.
Malaysian singer Yuna is back with a self-titled album full of her sweetly voiced lyrics and uplifting rhythms. A seemingly deep personal album that ranges in its vocal and music styling throughout. Could be a great addition to your summer’s coming mix tapes.
Everything in the World, Nettwerk Records
Wanting Qu, or just Wanting, as she’s known here, is a Chinese singer by way of Toronto. her pop lyrics are pleasantly sung morsels to melt the remaining cold spurts (see a pattern?) in your life. The album is mostly English-language, with the exception of a few instances. Will she be able to break out in the U.S.?
DVDs
